I have legitimate, registered copies of each version of the software, and often need to swap back and forth between versions on a weekly, and sometimes daily basis. When I train on my MacBook Pro, that's an easy thing to do. I use a third-party utility called Super Duper to create bootable external drives of my operating system, the software I support and my class files. The current version of the software always stays on my internal hard drive.
But when I need to train others on either of the two previous versions I support, I attach the appropriate external drive and run my Mac laptop from the bootable external drive. Doing monthly software updates are just as easy; I just boot from each external hard drive, then apply the latest software updates to the appropriate bootable external drive.
On my Windows 7 laptop, it's currently nowhere as easy. I first create a backup of my hard drive with the current software version and upgrades. Then I use an external drive to completely replace my current install with a full backup containing the appropriate previous version of the software I support.
